She sits very straight in a great white gown of frills and folds, hands laid one over the other in her lap, and she is not smiling for anybody. Gustav Klimt has set her against a wall of burnt orange scattered with small blue squares.
Behind her head there is an arch of coloured mosaic, like a window opening onto nothing, and the panel at her side is worked all over in little shapes that seem to look back at you!
The large areas of similar warm tones in the background and the intricate decorative pattern on the white dress create challenging sections with subtle colour variations.
