Behind him the leaning tower goes up in tier after tier of pale marble arches, tipping gently sideways the way it always has, and a knot of visitors in bright pink stands at the foot of it looking up.
Between them a marble fountain is crowded with stone cherubs, quite unbothered by the whole business!
