The Exploded Beetle by Peter Aschwanden – 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle (Pomegranate)

Peter Aschwanden, who drew the illustrations for How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, takes an orange Beetle apart and lays it out flat: the shell floating open in the middle, and around it a carpet of wheels, tyres, hubcaps, gears, springs, bolts, pistons, hoses and spanners in fine ink line on cream. People work among the parts — a woman in pink at the top left, a man reading in a bucket seat, a pair leaning into the body shell, a girl in yellow, and a dog at either end.

Everything is outlined, which helps, but the parts repeat in dozens of near-identical little clusters, so much of this comes down to sorting by the colour of a single bolt. Finished size 50.8 x 73.7cm.
