A learner driver edges a pale blue Ford Cortina through the high street of Burton village, instructor gripping the dashboard beside her. Outside the post office, a small crowd has gathered — a woman with a pram, a man walking a golden Labrador, a child looking on — and a couple of cyclists weave past the red telephone box without a care. A magpie picks about on the cobbles and a ginger cat slinks along the pavement. Noole's School of Motoring signs on the roof of the car tell you exactly how much is riding on this trip.
Steve Crisp has packed this scene with the kind of period detail that rewards time at the table — the flower baskets on the stone buildings, the vintage cars parked further along the road, the cherry blossom coming over the rooftops. The blue sky and warm stonework give the palette plenty of contrast, though the busy high street and multiple figures mean there's enough going on to keep you sorting for a while.
1000 pieces. Published by Falcon de Luxe to mark their 50th anniversary, and printed on quality board with their usual clean cut.
The scene is densely packed with figures, animals, buildings and period detail across a wide horizontal composition, with stone facades and foliage creating large areas of similar warm tones that will be tricky to sort.
