A lone tree stands in silhouette against one of the most dramatic skies you're likely to see in a jigsaw box. Deep crimson and vivid green aurora borealis fills the frame from the hilltops upward, with stars punching through above. The tree — the famous Sycamore Gap sycamore, which stood beside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland — is rendered completely dark against the glowing curtain behind it, its bare branches spread wide.
The photograph was taken before the tree was felled in September 2023, making this image something of a record of it at its most spectacular. The contrast between the black silhouette and the rolling aurora above gives the whole thing a quality that sits somewhere between landscape photography and fine art print. It would look good on a wall.
As a build, expect a real challenge. The aurora blends from red to green across a large portion of the puzzle with very gradual colour shifts and a sky full of near-identical stars. The lower silhouette is a solid mass of black. Sorting by colour will only get you so far — this one rewards patience and a good eye for the subtle differences in tone. 1000 pieces, part of Heye's Power of Nature photographic collection.
The image is dominated by a vast starfield sky with gradual aurora colour transitions from deep crimson to green, plus a large near-black silhouette foreground — almost no distinct shapes or colour breaks to sort by.
