A male cardinal, all bright red against the wood grain, perches on a fence post while his mate sits a little lower down on the rail, her soft fawn feathers a quiet contrast to his colour. Behind them the fence gives way to a wild tangle of vine leaves and berries, then a hillside of autumn trees in gold, rust and deep red, with the twin spires of a stone church rising above the tree line and a pale sky full of cloud.

George Kovach has painted the birds with a lot of detail in the feathers, so sorting will come down to working the reds against the browns and greens of the background before tackling that big block of autumn foliage. The church spires and sky give you a clean place to start and finish.

Good one for anyone who likes birds or an autumn scene, and the piece count keeps it a proper sit-down project rather than a quick afternoon build.

The detailed birds and foliage add complexity, but the strong red cardinals, structured fence and clear sky give plenty of anchor points.
