Britto takes on the most famous face in Dutch painting and rebuilds her out of pattern. The turban is there, and the pearl, and the over-the-shoulder look, but the face is split into flat planes of grey and pink, the jacket is a field of yellow flowers, and the whole thing sits on a brown ground scribbled over with his looping line.
Fifteen hundred pieces of flat colour inside heavy outlines, with that brown patterned ground the long job. Finished size 61 x 85cm.
The figure is strongly outlined and easy, but the scribbled brown background is a large area of near-uniform texture.
