Two afternoons, two very different ways to spend them. On the terrace at Sainte-Adresse, a gentleman in a straw hat settles into a wicker chair while a couple in their finery stroll to the railing to watch the sailing boats, and the flags snap in the sea breeze above the gladioli.
Then it's off to a poppy field, where a woman with a bright blue parasol walks through the long grass with a little one close behind. Which of the two would you wander into first?
The terrace has plenty of distinct figures, flags and boats as clear landmarks, but the poppy field and the broad skies and sea are made of soft, similar brushstrokes.
