The river winds away between banks of yellow flowers and the boat has drifted almost to a stop. She is up on her feet in her white summer dress and straw hat, one arm out towards the bank, pointing at something in the reeds; he stays sitting, oars shipped, letting her have her moment.
Brendekilde puts them right in the middle of spring: still water, tall trees on the far side, and a sky full of soft cloud.
