Henry VIII's fleet putting out from Dover, painted in the flat Tudor court manner: four great carracks with gilded hulls and gun ports open, one under cloth-of-gold sails, red and white St George streamers running from every masthead. Round stone blockhouses hold the shore, a column of courtiers in scarlet and black hose files along the quay, and rowing boats work between the ships on a choppy blue-green sea.
Wide and panoramic, with a thicket of near-identical rigging above and repeating wave crests below. Finished size 81.3 x 40.6cm.
