Velázquez sets the cross against nothing at all — a plain black ground, with no crowd, no hill and no sky. The figure is lit as though a lamp were held just in front of him, so the pale body and the white cloth are the only bright things in the picture.

His head has fallen forward and his hair hangs across half his face. Above him the board is nailed up with its lines of lettering, and everything else is dark and quiet.
