by Henri Matisse · 1000 pieces
The shutters are thrown open on a sunny morning in Collioure, and the whole harbour comes drifting in. Beyond the ivy-framed sill, little sailing boats lift their masts against soft pinks and lilacs, while pots of red geraniums sit on the ledge as though someone has only just stepped away.
Matisse lays it all down in thick, confident strokes of colour. Can you almost hear the gulls and smell the sea air?
Thick, painterly brushwork in many similar pastel pinks, lilacs and greens, with the dabbed ivy and sea areas giving few clear edges to work from.
