Wasgij puzzles break the one rule that every puzzler takes for granted: the picture on the box is what you build. With Wasgij, it isn't — and that single idea has turned them into one of the most beloved puzzle brands in the world.
What Does "Wasgij" Actually Mean?
Wasgij is "jigsaw" spelt backwards and is officially pronounced "Woz-gidge" — a name that neatly signals the whole concept. Instead of following tradition and asking puzzlers to piece together the same image printed on the box, Wasgij truly broke the mould by challenging puzzlers to use their imagination. The box art isn't your reference image; it's a clue. What you actually build is something else entirely — something you have to work out for yourself.
Wasgij isn't an "overnight" success story, but a brand which has been increasing in popularity since it first came to market in 1997. Wasgij Original 6: Blooming Marvellous was the UK's 2nd best-selling adult puzzle in 2001, and Wasgij Original 7: Bear Necessities was ranked 3rd bestseller in the same year. More than two decades later, new titles are still released every year, and the backlog of numbered editions means there's always something fresh to try.
The Four Main Types — Original, Mystery, Destiny, and Christmas
There are four active Wasgij concepts, each with its own twist on the core idea. They share the same basic premise — the box image is not what you build — but the specific puzzle differs depending on which range you pick up.
Wasgij Original
The first concept, released in 1997, was Wasgij Original — the brainteasing puzzle that requires puzzlers to use their imagination (and a few clues provided) to put themselves in the position of a particular character in the box image. Once the puzzler has done this, they need to imagine what that character is looking at in front of them — that is the image they must piece together.
This style is the hardest type of Wasgij. There are fewer clues to rely on, since essentially nothing you see on the box is on the completed puzzle. The scene in front of you is a kind of stage — populated with characters, colour, and atmosphere that hint at what lies beyond the frame. A good example of this range is Wasgij Original 47: Boating Bedlam!, where the riverside chaos on the box gives you just enough to start piecing together the view.

Wasgij Mystery is the "what happens next?" puzzle concept, where you have to use your imagination to piece together what will happen next to the characters in the image printed on the box. The scene on the box shows a moment frozen in time — something is clearly about to happen — and your puzzle is the chaotic, comic aftermath.
With Wasgij Mystery puzzles, you are puzzling a scene that is just a couple of minutes into the future. This version gives you the most clues. You can use the walls, floor, people, and animals as references for grouping pieces together. It's widely considered the most approachable Wasgij for first-timers, which is why we'd recommend Wasgij Mystery 29: Donation Debacle! as an excellent place to start.

View puzzle →Wasgij Destiny
Wasgij Destiny is the "time travelling" puzzle concept, where you have to use your imagination to piece together what the characters and the scene in the image printed on the box will look like in the future. The box shows a moment in time — perhaps a bustling town square or a lively garden party — and your job is to imagine how that same scene might look decades later. Have the buildings changed? Are the characters older? Has the whole setting been transformed?
Destiny is the second most challenging style for Wasgij puzzles. You have some reference for colour, layout, and characters — but the transformation between "then" and "now" keeps you guessing.
Wasgij Christmas
Wasgij Christmas follows the Wasgij Original concept, where you have to use your imagination to piece together what the characters in the scene printed on the box are looking at. The difference is in the setting: every Christmas edition is steeped in festive atmosphere, with snow, decorations, and all the warmth of the season. These puzzles have a festive theme with mistletoe, holly, carollers, and even Santa. They make for a brilliant seasonal project and have become a firm tradition in many households.
Wasgij Retro
The first seven Wasgij puzzles were 500-piece puzzles, and they are now being re-released as 1000-piece Wasgij Retro puzzles. If you want to experience the origins of the concept in their full-sized form, the Retro range is a wonderful way to do it. Wasgij Retro Mystery 10: Spring Has Sprung! is a charming example — classic Wasgij humour with all 1,000 pieces of modern build quality.

Wasgij puzzles are produced by Jumbo, a game, puzzle, and toy manufacturer based in the Netherlands. Jumbo use environmentally friendly, recycled cardboard and chlorine-free paper, which produces a seamless look. Jumbo pieces tend to be thick with a tight fit, so sections of the puzzle are more likely to stay connected when you need to move them. All standard Wasgij puzzles are 1,000 pieces — enough to give you a proper challenge without tipping over into the truly gruelling.
The image on the box isn't what you're building — it's a puzzle in itself, hiding the clues you need to find.
What Makes Them So Enjoyable?
The addictive concept is designed to keep the puzzler guessing right up until they have completed the puzzle. That sustained uncertainty is genuinely unlike anything else in the jigsaw world. With a standard puzzle, you glance at the box when you're stuck. With a Wasgij, the box only tells you so much — and the real satisfaction comes from piecing the image together through logic, colour-matching, and the odd inspired guess.
Each of the Wasgij concepts is unique in its own right — offering puzzlers something different from traditional puzzles. They are entertaining, challenging, and most importantly amusing — with pictorial humour scattered throughout each puzzle. The illustrations are packed with comic detail: eccentric characters, visual jokes, and the odd hidden Easter egg tucked into the scene. Spotting those recurring characters mid-build is its own small reward.
Tips for Tackling Your First Wasgij
The good news is that you don't need a completely different approach to the one you already use. The fundamentals of jigsaw puzzling still apply — but there are a few Wasgij-specific habits worth developing.
- Start with the edges as usual. The border pieces give you a fixed frame to work within, and for Wasgij that structure is especially valuable when the interior is still a mystery.
- Study the box art carefully before you begin. It's a combination of imagination and using clues from the box. Look at colours, lighting, and the direction characters are facing. These tell you a lot about what the completed puzzle might contain.
- Sort by colour and texture, not by subject. Since you can't compare a piece to the box picture in the usual way, colour groupings become your primary tool. Sky pieces, skin tones, foliage, interiors — separate them early.
- Read the insert leaflet. Every Wasgij comes with a small hints leaflet inside. It won't spoil the image, but it gives you enough context to orient yourself — particularly useful on an Original where the scene shift can feel disorientating at first.
- Don't panic when pieces don't seem to fit the box. The shapes and buildings in the puzzle may look completely different from the box. At first it can be frustrating, as normally if you get stuck with a normal jigsaw you look at the picture on the box — but you can't do this directly with Wasgij puzzles. That's entirely expected. Trust the process.
- Start with a Mystery if you're new to Wasgij. For your first Wasgij, it's recommended to try a Mystery puzzle. The scene on the box shares the same setting as the completed image, so you have more to work with.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the solution ever shown anywhere on the box?
The unique element of Wasgij puzzles is that you never see the solution on the box — you always have to puzzle it out yourself. The box art is a clue, not a cheat sheet. That said, there are fan communities online where completed solutions have been shared, should you ever genuinely get stuck.
Are all Wasgij puzzles 1,000 pieces?
The main adult range is 1,000 pieces across Original, Mystery, Destiny, and Christmas. Most are 1,000 pieces, though you can also get smaller 150 and 500-piece versions. The Retro range, which revisits the very earliest Wasgij designs, is now also released at 1,000 pieces.
Which type should a complete beginner try first?
Wasgij Mystery is broadly considered the most accessible starting point. The box scene shares its setting with the completed puzzle, so colour and background clues carry over more directly. Wasgij Original is the most challenging, as the viewpoint shifts entirely — but many puzzlers find it the most satisfying once they've got their eye in.
Can I do a Wasgij on my own, or are they better with others?
Both, honestly. Doing one solo is a deeply satisfying slow-burn challenge. But Wasgij puzzles work particularly well with a companion or family group, because the speculation about what the final image might be becomes part of the fun. You'll have ongoing theories, running debates, and a proper moment of shared triumph when the picture finally resolves.
Are Wasgij puzzles good quality?
Yes — Jumbo's production standards are consistently high. Jumbo pieces tend to be thick with a tight fit, meaning sections of the puzzle are more likely to stay connected when you need to move them. The illustration style has remained characterful and detailed across the range's entire history, which spans nearly 30 years.
