The lilac is out, all pink and mauve behind a little blue birdhouse with a tin roof and WELCOME painted over the door, and every bird in the garden has turned up at once. A robin has the doorstep, a scarlet cardinal has the ledge, and a goldfinch and a sparrow are arguing it out on the roof.
Hummingbirds hover round the edges waiting for a gap, and a swallowtail butterfly drifts past below, staying well out of it!
Many colourful birds provide distinct reference points, lilac blooms create repetitive pink areas, central birdhouse anchors the composition
