Three bighorn rams stand on a rocky ridge, rendered in realistic detail against a background that looks like someone attacked a canvas with every colour in the studio. Sweeping arcs of pink, green, blue and yellow paint cut across layers of torn paper, graffiti text and ink splatter — the animals are photorealistic; the world around them is not. The contrast is the whole point.
This is part of Günter Konrad's Rebrush! series, published by Heye, which drops wildlife subjects into explosive mixed-media compositions. The rams hold your eye while you sort through the chaos behind them, which makes it a more manageable 1000-piece build than it might first appear. The background will still keep you busy — those sweeping paint strokes have plenty of similar-toned sections to work through.
The finished image is bold enough to frame, and the series has a strong following among puzzlers who like something with a bit more edge than a country cottage.
The realistically painted rams provide strong anchor points, but the background is a dense mix of similar-toned paint sweeps, torn paper textures and graffiti marks with very few distinct colour boundaries to sort by.
