CJ Hurley works in heavy black outline and flat colour, like a woodblock print: a red five-tiered pagoda on the rise at the left, a small tiled tea house at the centre with a gold path curving down from it, a humpbacked wooden bridge over a bright blue stream, and stone lanterns standing in the grass. A red-leafed maple sits behind the bridge, a tree hung with yellow blossom leans in from the right, and big white dogwood flowers open across the foreground.
The green middle band is one long stretch of similar leaf texture, but every shape has a hard outlined edge, so pieces snap into place once their neighbourhood is found. Finished size 50.8 x 73.7cm.
Distinct colour zones with clear structural elements like the bridge, pagoda, and trees provide good reference points despite moderate detail.
