She looks out of the corner of her eye at something just past your shoulder, and she has been doing it for a very long time. The whole face is built from thousands of little cut stones — pale gold across the cheek, russet banked in tight around the eyes to give her that look.
Along the top edge the mosaic has broken away to bare plaster, which somehow only makes her steadier.
