Arcimboldo painted his emperor as a heap of produce and somehow got away with it. Rudolf II has a pear for a nose, a courgette and an aubergine making up his cheek and brow, cherries for eyes, a chestnut-husk beard and a chest of marrows and cabbage leaves, with a wreath of grapes and wheat where the hair should be.
Fruit and vegetables in every direction against a flat black ground. Finished size 48 x 69cm.
