Jigsaw Puzzle Gifts for Christmas 2026: What to Buy for Whom

Jigsaw puzzle gifts chosen by the person, not the piece count: the farm fan, the joker, the art lover, the expert and the grandparent.

Jigsaw Puzzle Gifts for Christmas 2026: What to Buy for Whom

The best jigsaw puzzle gifts are chosen for the person, not the piece count. Start with what they already love (a programme, a place, a painter, a cat) and the right box usually picks itself. This guide goes through the people most of us buy for at Christmas, with a puzzle or a shelf of puzzles for each.

How to choose a jigsaw puzzle gift

Two questions settle most of it. What do they like looking at, and how much table do they have? A puzzle is a picture somebody spends ten hours with, so the subject matters more than the brand. And a finished 1000 piece puzzle is about 70 x 50 cm, which is most of a small dining table. If you are not sure they have the room, 500 pieces (about 49 x 36 cm) is the safer present. Our jigsaw puzzle size guide has the finished sizes for every piece count, brand by brand.

If they have never mentioned doing a puzzle, 500 pieces is also the right place to start: an evening or two, and they get to finish it. Our 500 piece puzzles are here.

For the Clarkson's Farm fan

Ravensburger's Diddly Squat Farm Shop is drawn by Andy Tudor as a cartoon of the shop on a busy day. There are goats on the roof, a combine harvester in the car park and a long queue for Cow Juice. It is busy from edge to edge, so there is no dull stretch of sky to grind through, and whoever unwraps it will spend the first ten minutes just reading the box. It is 1000 pieces. There are more farm puzzles in our Diddly Squat collection.

For the one who likes a joke

A Wasgij is a jigsaw with a catch: the picture on the box is not the picture you build. The box is a clue. In a Wasgij Original you build what one of the characters on the box can see. The Bake Off! is set at a village fete baking contest, and the puzzle is the scene from the judge's side of the table. (It is Jumbo's own baking contest, not a television tie-in.) It suits anyone who watches baking programmes with opinions.

A Wasgij Mystery asks a different question: what happens next? Efteling: World of Wonders! shows a day out at the Dutch fairytale theme park, with a jester, a rollercoaster and a crowd of families. You build the moment after the one on the box. A good one for a family who have been, or for a collector who is missing a Mystery. If the idea is new to you, our Wasgij explainer covers all four kinds, and the whole range is in Wasgij puzzles.

For the art lover

A painting makes a harder puzzle than a photograph, and a better one to leave out on the table. Bluebird's detail from The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is all gold and pattern in 1000 pieces. It is slow, and it looks wonderful half done. For more painters, see art and fine art puzzles. If they are the sort to glue and frame one, our frame-worthy puzzles are picked for that.

For someone with one great love

Some people are easy: they love one thing and everyone knows it. For them a puzzle of that thing beats a clever choice every time.

  • Cats. Cat puzzles, from cartoon chaos to painted portraits.
  • Steam trains. Steam train and railway puzzles, many of them from paintings by railway artists.
  • A place. The town they grew up in, or where they go every summer. Type a postcode into our puzzle map and it shows the puzzles of places nearby.
  • Christmas itself. This year's festive scenes are in Christmas puzzles 2026.

For the puzzler who has done them all

If they finish a 1000 piece puzzle in a weekend, go bigger. A 3000 piece puzzle is a winter project (about 121 x 80 cm when finished, so check they have a table or a board for it). A Wasgij is the other answer, because experience does not help much when there is no picture to copy.

For grandparents and smaller hands

Standard pieces can be fiddly if eyesight or grip is not what it was. Large piece puzzles have grown-up pictures on bigger pieces that are easier to see and to pick up. For children, start with children's puzzles and go by the age on the box.

Jigsaw puzzle gift questions

How many pieces should a jigsaw puzzle gift have?

For most adults, 1000 pieces. It is the standard size, with the widest choice of pictures, and takes roughly five to ten hours. Choose 500 pieces for a beginner or a small table, and 2000 or 3000 for someone who already does a lot of puzzles.

How big is a 1000 piece puzzle when it is finished?

About 70 x 50 cm (roughly 27 x 20 inches). The exact size varies a little by maker.

What is a good puzzle for someone who has never done one?

A 500 piece puzzle with a busy, colourful picture and not much sky or sea. Lots of small details give a beginner plenty of places to start.

Is a Wasgij a good present?

Yes, for someone who enjoys a joke and a bit of a challenge. You do not build the picture on the box, so it is harder than an ordinary puzzle of the same size. For a first-time puzzler, choose an ordinary puzzle instead.
