Marilyn Monroe's face fills the entire canvas in this large-scale painting by artist Voka — part of Heye's People by Voka series. It's not a clean portrait. Paint drips down from the hairline, loose brushstrokes collide across her cheeks in turquoise, green, orange and violet, and the deep red background bleeds into the edges of her platinum hair. The red lips are the one anchor point the eye keeps returning to.
As a build, this one is genuinely demanding. The face itself has enough colour variety to sort, but the background is a near-uniform crimson with very little to distinguish one piece from the next. Anyone who's tackled a Voka puzzle before will know to leave that section until last. The finished image is the kind of thing that looks good on a wall — large format, bold, and not something you'd mistake for a photograph.
The heavily textured, abstract brushwork creates large areas of near-identical colour, particularly the deep red background with very few distinguishing features to separate pieces.
