Seven horses stand about in a field on a soft grey day, arranged as though somebody has asked them all to hold still a moment. The chestnut with the flaxen mane has turned to look back across the group, a spotted grey waits at the far side, and the glossy red bay has given us nothing but his hindquarters!
Right in the middle a pale dun foal has planted himself in front of the lot of them. Emil Volkers signed it in the corner.
The varied coat colours and patterns of the different horse breeds help differentiation, though the green grass background is fairly uniform.
