Martin Johnson Heade - Cattleya Orchid and Three Hummingbirds, 1871 - 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle (Bluebird)

Heade went to Brazil to paint hummingbirds and came back painting them like this, which nobody had done before. A single pink cattleya orchid opens in the foreground on its thick leaves, three tiny birds hang about a nest on the branch beside it, and behind them a warm mist has swallowed the whole forest.

Soft misted greys over most of the canvas with the orchid the one sharp thing in it. Finished size 69 x 48cm.
