Somebody has been very busy in the botanical studio! This old-fashioned natural history plate, headed Fishes, has swum off in a delightful direction: every one of its numbered specimens is part fish and part plant. There's a peony with a perch's face, a strawberry with fins, a cactus that has clearly decided it belongs underwater, and a spiky pineapple puffer.
Each one has its own number and tiny label along the bottom, just like a proper museum chart, so the hunt for your favourite is half the fun. Which one would you pin to the wall?
The cream background is repeated across large areas and many of the leaves and fish bodies are similar shades of green, so there are few distinct clues outside the bright flower heads.
