Ravensburger has launched something genuinely different: a series of 3D Puzzle Vases that build into a real, free-standing vase you can actually fill with fresh flowers. There are five designs in the range, each made from 162 pieces, and they're the rare sort of puzzle that earns a permanent spot on a shelf once the last piece is in.
Not your usual jigsaw
Most jigsaws get boxed away again the moment they're finished. These don't. Each vase is a shaped, three-dimensional puzzle, so the pieces curve and clip together into the form of a chunky ceramic pot rather than lying flat on the table. Place the last piece and you're left with a solid vase standing 18cm tall, not a picture you'll only break apart again.
At 162 pieces they aren't a marathon, either. The challenge comes from working in three dimensions rather than from sheer piece count, which makes each one a satisfying evening or weekend build rather than a fortnight's commitment.
It's a clever piece of design, and part of Ravensburger's wider push towards puzzles made for grown-ups. The vases were first shown as just two designs at Toy Fair earlier this year, went on to win a Hero Toy award in the Puzzle category, and were picked out in the national press as one of the kidult launches to watch this year.
Made for fresh flowers
Here's the detail we love most: every vase comes with a waterproof liner that sits inside the finished puzzle, so it genuinely works. A few stems from the garden, a supermarket bunch, or a single statement bloom all look the part, exactly as you'd hope from the artwork on the box.
That's what makes these so giftable. The finished result feels less like a puzzle you've completed and more like something you've made for the house, equal parts quiet afternoon project and finished object you'll want on display.
"Our 3D Puzzle Vases have already received a great reception and with the range of on-trend designs in the collection, they present a great value gift idea for any jigsaw fan." — Elaine Connell, Product Marketing Manager, Ravensburger UK
The five designs
The launch range runs from neutral abstracts through fresh stripes, soft ombré and clean solid colour, so there's one to suit most rooms. Here's the full set.
The boho abstract is the showiest of the family: a warm cream body scattered with soft coral and petrol-teal shapes, a rust-red ring and a little gold scalloped collar around the neck. It's the one that genuinely looks like a piece of handmade studio pottery.
The sage-green abstract is the gentler cousin, a muted green pot with cream and terracotta detailing that settles happily against almost any wall colour.
If you prefer something crisper, the striped design pairs a soft white-to-grey ombré body with fine navy vertical stripes: fresh, simple and a little bit coastal.
The terracotta vase is all warmth, fading from a rich rust at the top down to soft grey at the base. It's an ombré that looks especially lovely with yellow or seasonal blooms.
And the solid sand-coloured vase is the quiet one: a smooth, matte oatmeal finish that lets whatever you put in it do all the talking.
Pre-orders are open
Several of the designs are open to pre-order right now, with stock arriving over the summer, so reserve the one you like and we'll send it the moment it lands. You can check live availability on each design's page above, or see them all together in our vase puzzle collection.
They make a lovely just-because treat, and an easy gift for the puzzler in your life who has, frankly, already done every 1000-piece landscape going. You'll find the latest reservations across every brand in our pre-orders collection, too.
