The young apprentice on the left has paused mid-stroke, brush in paw, to see what the master thinks. The master squirrel, a flat cap on his head and his big orange tail curled behind him, is giving the canvas his full attention. Has he got the spires just right? The little one on the table is keeping very quiet, just in case.
The easel sits by an open archway with flowers climbing round it, and out beyond it stands the fairytale castle they are painting, glowing in the evening light.
The three orange squirrels, the easel and the castle give clear focal points, but the dense foliage and the soft blue-green background are harder to read.
