Description
Ticket to Ride is a beautifully designed board game with elegantly simple gameplay that can be learned in under 15 minutes. In the game, players collect cards featuring various types of train cars, which they use to claim railway routes across North America. The longer the routes, the more points players earn. Additional points are awarded to those who fulfill Destination Tickets, which are goal cards that connect distant cities, and to the player who builds the longest continuous route.
As the game's author, Alan R. Moon, puts it, "The rules are simple enough to write on a train ticket – each turn you either draw more cards, claim a route, or get additional Destination Tickets. The tension comes from being forced to balance greed – adding more cards to your hand – and fear – losing a critical route to a competitor."
Ticket to Ride is part of Days of Wonder's tradition of producing high-quality, big-format board games. It features an oversize board map of North America, 225 custom-molded train cars, 144 illustrated cards, and wooden scoring markers.
Since its introduction and numerous subsequent awards, Ticket to Ride has become a BoardGameGeek epitome of a "gateway game." It is simple enough to be taught in just a few minutes, yet offers enough action and tension to keep new players engaged and involved in the game from start to finish.
Ticket to Ride is part of the larger Ticket to Ride series, which includes several other map expansions and standalone games based on various regions and countries.
How to Play
To set up the game, place the board map in the center of the table, distribute colored train cars and matching scoring markers to each player, shuffle the Train Car cards and deal a starting hand of 4 cards to each player, and turn the top five cards from the deck face-up. Each player receives three Destination Ticket cards and must keep at least two of them. The players keep their Destination Tickets secret until the end of the game.
The game begins with the most experienced traveler and proceeds clockwise. On their turn, a player can perform one of three actions: draw Train Car cards, claim a route, or draw Destination Ticket cards. Players can claim routes by playing a set of Train Car cards that match the color and length of the route, then placing their colored trains on each space of the route and moving their scoring marker accordingly.
The game ends when a player has only 0, 1, or 2 trains left at the end of their turn. Each player gets one final turn, and then the scores are calculated. Players reveal their Destination Tickets and add or subtract points based on their success in connecting the cities listed. The player with the longest continuous path of routes receives a bonus of 10 points. The player with the most points wins the game, with ties broken by the number of completed Destination Tickets and the longest continuous path.
