Kingmaker: The Royal Re-Launch

Release Date: 15th May 2023

From the mind of Andrew McNeil, the iconic strategy game of manipulation, deception, and unforeseen events, Kingmaker is back and better than ever before. First launched in 1974, this game masterfully simulates the Wars of the Roses, the period of sporadic Civil War in England between 1450 and 1490.

Game Premise:

  • The game is based on the premise that powerful Noble families used the Lancastrian and Yorkist princes as pawns in a greater game of gaining control of England.
  • Players control their ‘faction' using military and political power to influence the royal heirs, while attempting to eliminate all other heirs.

The Royal Re-Launch includes:

  • The Original Classic Game: The original version developed by Andrew McNeil in 1974. A game for 2-6 players where victory is achieved only by controlling the last crowned piece.
  • Kingmaker II: A new version developed by Alan Paull, incorporating fan-favorite house rules. Designed for 2-5 players, this version offers a shorter gameplay with various win conditions, including alliances and prestige.
  • The Extended Version: An epic version featuring extra Crown and Event cards, and additional rules for Parliament and Battles. Dice are used to determine the fate of Nobles and Royal pieces.
  • Solo Play: A solo game designed by Steve Froud, using Classic Kingmaker rules against a single Bot opponent. This version provides a challenging gameplay for a single human player.

How to Play

Kingmaker is a game set during the Wars of the Roses in England. The objective of the game is to be the last player with a surviving member of your faction.

To start, players choose their faction and receive a set of cards representing their armies, leaders, and events. Players then take turns moving their armies across the board, capturing castles and cities, and engaging in battles with other players.

Players can also use event cards to gain advantages or hinder other players. The game ends when only one faction has surviving members or when a time limit is reached.

Before starting the game, players may agree on a rough time limit for play. We recommend a minimum of 45 minutes plus a further 30 minutes per player.

Overall, Kingmaker is an exciting strategy game that requires careful planning and cunning tactics to emerge victorious. Enjoy!
