In JAWS: The Board Game, one player assumes the role of the infamous killer shark lurking off Amity Island, while the other 1-3 players take on the characters of Brody, Hooper, and Quint, working together to hunt down the shark. The game utilizes character and event cards to establish player abilities and generate game actions for both the humans and the shark. The gameplay is divided into two acts — Amity Island and The Orca — and takes place on a double-sided board that mirrors the film's narrative:
During the Amity Island phase, the shark terrorizes swimmers and evades capture, while the other players strive to determine the shark's whereabouts and rescue swimmers from potential attacks.
In the Orca phase, which unfolds on the reverse side of the game board, Brody, Hooper, and Quint find themselves aboard the sinking vessel, locked in an intense battle against the shark. Players utilize additional action and strategy cards to protect the Orca from the shark's relentless assault.
The game concludes when either the humans successfully eliminate the shark or the shark triumphs by successfully attacking the Orca.
Large areas of similar blue water tones make the ocean sections challenging, but the distinctive shark and surface provide helpful reference points.
